Use this field to search for any word, phrase, numerical sequence
or abbreviation anywhere in the entire database. If you are not
sure where a certain word or phrase might appear, enter it in this
field.

Use this field to find articles written by a particular person.
You may search a first name and last name by putting the name in
quotes.

Example 1: To find summaries written by Mark Schoofs, enter
the following:
To find two or more authors, enter the last name first and put
quotes around the names.
Example 2: To find summaries written by Mark Schoofs or

Use this field to find all summaries from a particular source.
Sources include newspapers, newswires, medical journals, and other
periodicals.

Use this field to find particular terms in the abstract.

Example: To find summaries that mention AIDS Action Committee
in the abstract, enter the following:
Descriptors

Use this field to find summaries about a particular topic. Choose
from the dropdown list of topics or "descriptors," which
comes from the CDC National Prevention Information Network Database
Thesaurus. When you search using descriptors you are able to take
advantage of the effort that a CDC NPIN staff member has already
made in selecting words that reflect the content of the summary.
You may select more than one descriptor by holding down the "Control"
key on your keyboard while clicking on another descriptor with your
mouse. You may also use this method to deselect descriptors.

Example 1: To find News summaries about a particular topic,
such as abstinence, choose the word "abstinence" from
the dropdown list of topics or descriptors.
Start Date/End Date

Use this field to find summaries written between particular dates.
The dates range from January 2000 to the present. Use the MM/DD/YYYY
format when entering the date.

Example: To find all summaries written between January 1,
2000, and August 1, 2000, that mention Japan, enter the following:

There are two display options that control the format and the number
of results displayed on your screen. These options are found on
the bottom of the Prevention News Update Database page.
Select Display Format

Display a list of matching abstracts.
Selecting this option will display a list of only article titles
on your screen. To view the full record of one abstract, click
on the highlighted title.
You may also view multiple records. Click in the checkboxes
next to the records you want to see, then click on the View
button at the top or bottom of the screen to show the multiple,
detailed records.

Display complete information about all matching abstracts.
Selecting this option will display all of the results in full
format, meaning that all of the fields in a particular record
will be displayed on your screen.
Maximum Number of Abstracts to Display
If you want to change the number of abstracts that can be displayed,
you may change the number in the box. The maximum amount of abstracts
that can be displayed is 999.
Maximum Number of Abstracts to Display Per Page
You may change the amount of abstracts displayed per page by adjusting
the number. The maximum number of abstracts to display per page
is 99.
