Educational Materials: Field Help

You can enter words into any or all of these fields to search the Education Materials Database. NOTE: For suggestions and hints on searching this database, read the search tips.

Use this field to search for any word, phrase, numerical sequence, or abbreviation anywhere in the entire database. If you are not sure where a certain word or phrase might appear, enter it in this field. Be sure to use quotation marks surrounding specific phrases, numerical sequences, and abbreviations, for retrieval of exact information.

To search for records with the words "outpatient" and "psychotherapy", enter the following:

Use this field to find materials with a certain word or words in their titles. If you enter a title with more than one word in its name, put quotes around it.

Use this field to find materials authored by an author or corporate author.

Use this field if you are searching for materials in a specific format.

You may select more than one format by holding down the "Control" key on your keyboard while clicking on another format with your mouse. You may also use this method to deselect formats.

Use this field if you are looking for materials that are written in a specific language.

You may select more than one language by holding down the "Control" key on your keyboard while clicking on another language with your mouse. You may also use this method to deselect languages.

Use this field to find materials published between particular years. Use the YYYY format when entering the year.

Use this field to find materials from a specific publisher.

Descriptors

Use this field to find materials about a particular topic. Choose from the dropdown list of topics or "descriptors," which comes from the CDC National Prevention Information Network Database Thesaurus. When you search using descriptors you are able to take advantage of the effort that a CDC NPIN staff member has already made in selecting words that reflect the content of the materials.

You may select more than one descriptor by holding down the "Control" key on your keyboard while clicking on another descriptor with your mouse. You may also use this method to deselect descriptors.

Example:
To find materials about a particular topic, such as abstinence education, choose the phrase "abstinence education" from the dropdown list of descriptors.

Use this field to search for materials that target a particular group of people.

You may select more than one target audience by holding down the "Control" key on your keyboard while clicking on another target audience with your mouse. You may also use this method to deselect target audiences.

Use this field to search for materials sponsored by a particular group or organization.

Use these fields to search for materials distributed by a particular group or organization.

Use this field to find materials with a certain word or words in the material abstract.

Display Formatting

There are two display options that control the format and the number of results displayed on your screen. These options are found at the bottom of the Education Materials Database search page.

Select Display Format

  1. List of matching organizations.
    Selecting this option will display a list of only organization names on your screen. To view the full record of one organization, click on the highlighted name.

    You may also view multiple records. Click in the checkboxes next to the records you want to see, then click on the View button at the top or bottom of the screen to show the multiple, detailed records.

  2. Complete information about matching organizations.
    Selecting this option will display all of the results in full format, meaning that all of the fields in a particular record will be displayed on your screen.

Maximum Number of Organizations to Display
If you want to change the number of organizations that can be displayed, you may change the number in the box. The maximum amount of organizations that can be displayed is 999.

Maximum Number of Organizations to Display Per Page
You may change the amount of organizations displayed per page by adjusting the number. The maximum number of organizations to display per page is 99.
