Funding: Field Help
These fields are available in Funding Database Search Option. Note:
For suggestions and hints for searching this database, read the
search tips.
Open Opportunities/Open and Closed Opportunities

Use this field to search for opportunities that are open (after
the current date) or search all the funding opportunities in the
database.

To search for criteria in open funding opportunities, select the

Use this field to search for any word, phrase, numerical sequence,
or abbreviation anywhere in the entire database. If you are not
sure where a certain word or phrase might appear, enter it in this
field. Be sure to use quotation marks surrounding specific phrases,
numerical sequences, and abbreviations, for retrieval of exact information.

phrases, punctuation, and truncation tips.
Note: Selecting the and operator (default) allows for a
more specific search. The or operator allows for a broader

Example:
To find funding opportunities that mention Philadelphia anywhere
in the announcement, enter the following:

Use this field to find funding opportunities with particular words
in the title. You may use quotation marks to search for exact words,
such as "Prevention Intervention Research."
Note: Selecting the and operator (default) allows for a
more specific search. The or operator allows for a broader

Example: To find funding opportunities with "STD" in the
title, enter the following:

Use this field to find funding opportunities with particular words
in the Funder name.

To find funding opportunities from the Chicago Foundation for Women,

Type of Support

Type of Support refers to the form of financial or nonfinancial
assistance provided by the funder. Some examples include project
grants, equipment, and exchange programs.
You may select more than one type of support by holding down the
"Control" key on your keyboard while clicking on another type of
support with your mouse. You may also use this method to deselect
types of support.
Note: Selecting the and operator (default) allows for a
more specific search. The or operator allows for a broader

Example:
To find all funding opportunities that provide building/renovation
support, select the following:
Location

Use this field to find funding opportunities for projects to benefit
people in particular states. Many funding opportunities are national
in scope, therefore, you may want to select "National" from the
drop down box. When searching by state in the Location field, funds
retrieved will include any for which location has not been restricted
by the funder.
To locate funding opportunities to benefit people in a particular
city, or non-U.S. locations, enter the location name in the "Search
All Text Field."
You may select more than one location by holding down the "Control"
key on your keyboard while clicking on another location with your
mouse. You may also use this method to deselect locations.

Example:
To find funding opportunities to benefit people nationally, select
the following:
Subject Area

The Subject Area is a key word(s) or phrase that describes the
basic focus or theme of the funding opportunity. Use this field
to find all funding opportunities that are related to this subject
area or theme.
You may select more than one subject area by holding down the "Control"
key on your keyboard while clicking on another subject area with
your mouse. You may also use this method to deselect subject areas.
Note: Selecting the and operator (default) allows for a
more specific search. The or operator allows for a broader

Example:
To find funding opportunities that support adolescents, select the
following:
Eligible Organizations

Use the pull-down menu to search for funding opportunities for
a particular organization type.
You may select more than one eligible organization by holding down
the "Control" key on your keyboard while clicking on another eligible
organization with your mouse. You may also use this method to deselect
eligible organizations.

Example:
To find funding opportunities for city agencies, select the following:
Target Audience

The target audience is the population group(s) that will ultimately
benefit from the activities being funded. Use the list box to select
a target audience.
You may select more than one target audience by holding down the
"Control" key on your keyboard while clicking on another target
audience with your mouse. You may also use this method to deselect
target audiences.

Example:
To find funding opportunities targeted to allied health professionals,
select the following:
Application Deadline
Top of Page
The Application Deadline is the date by which the application must
be submitted. Performing a search on this field will find all funding
opportunities with the application deadline of a particular date
or later. In some cases, the application deadline is either not
known or has not been specified by the funder. Use the MM/DD/YYYY
format when entering the date.
Example:
To find all funding opportunities with an application deadline of
May 2001 and later, enter the following:
Display Formatting
Top of Page
There are two display options that control the format and the number
of results displayed to your screen. These options are found on
the bottom of the "Funding Database" page.
Select Display Format
-
List of matching funds.
Selecting this option will display a list of only organization
names on your screen. To view the full record of one funding
record, click on the highlighted title.
You may also view multiple records. Click in the checkboxes
next to the records you want to see, then click on the View
button at the top or bottom of the screen to show the multiple,
detailed records.

Display complete information about all matching funds.
Selecting this option will display all of the results in full
format, meaning that all of the fields in a particular record
will be displayed on your screen.
Maximum Number of Funds to Display
If you want to change the number of funding records that can be
displayed, you may change the number in the box. The maximum amount
of funding records that can be displayed is 999.
Maximum Number of Funds to Display Per Page
You may change the amount of funding records displayed per page
by adjusting the number. The maximum number of funds to display
per page is 99.
